Wamena Hotels
Wamena is the capital of the Jayawijaya district and has a population of over 100,000 people. In the Papua central highlands, Wamena is the largest town. The most important part of Wamena is the market from where most people buy their food for the trek or journey ahead. Wamena is home to the Dani people and you will get to see the classic Dani village, understand their traditions and enjoy the beauty of nature in the surrounding area.
Wamena is normally warm and wet for most part of the year and the best season to visit here is around July and August. The one problem that you may face is that no one in this town understands or speaks English, so it is always better to take a local guide along with you. There are many trails that lead from each of the villages deeper into the forests. You will find the ground to be slippery and even muddy in some places so be careful about your footing.
Wamena is like a walk into the wild as the roads are not good and it is a little tough to reach the town. So if you are a true travel enthusiast then you will find your way through. You will come across Dani people who are always nearly naked and cover their essentials with the traditional Cotica. You can only reach Wamena through Bemo. The Dani women are also mostly naked and the married women wear pleated skirts while the un-married ones wear grass skirts.
