Surat Thani when translated in Thai means the City of the Good People. It is spread over a large area of 12,891 sq km and lies 644 km from Bangkok. Surat Thani is a nice and quite destination for travelers and especially a good place for those looking for some peace. Surrounded by virgin forests growing on the mountain slopes and high plateaus, Surat Thani is definitely a tropical paradise. The Pak Nam Tapi River flows through the province and offers some activities and camping along the banks of the river.
6 km from the town lies the Khao Tha Phet Wildlife and Nature Education Centre. Built over an area of 1,162 acres, it is home to both wild animals and caged animals. There is a stupa in Khao Tha Phet and it is known as Tha Phet. It is a revered place located 210 meter above the sea level. The hilltop above the stupa offers a panoramic view of the town of Surat Thani and you can also get a glimpse of the Tapi River.
One of the better known places is the Phra Borommathat Chaiya, which is an ancient pagoda and is home to Lord Buddha’s relics. It is 54 km north from the provincial capital and is situated in Amphoe Chaiya. The pagoda dates back to almost 1,200 years. Another famous temple is the Wat Suan Mokkhaphalaram also known as the Suan Mok temple. It is situated 50 km north from the provincial capital and was founded by Bhikkhu Buddhadhasa.
