Sukothai Hotels
Sukothai lies some 430km from Bangkok. In the past, Sukothai was the capital of Thailand and presents richness in the form of historical ruins, most of which are part of Unesco World Heritage Site. The golden era of Sukothai lasted from the 13th to the 14th century and this was the period when various forms of art and architecture were developed.
Today, Sukothai is divided into two parts, the old town and the new town. Like in most cities of the world, the new town has the entire infrastructure in place and boasts of all facilities including accommodation. On the other hand the old town of Sukothai retains the cultural and the historical heritage in the form of a large Historical Park.
Lying over an area of 70sq km, the Historical Park is 5 to 6 hrs drive from Chiang Mai. Sukothai history can be dated as long back as 1238, and it is said to have been found by two Thai generals, who fought and defeated the Khmers who were the initial inhabitants.
Some of the best places to visit in Sukothai include Wat Mahathat, which is the spiritual centre and it used to be the king's temple and is adorned by the Sukothai architecture. Contrary to the Sukothai architecture, the Wat Sri Sawai highlights Khmer architecture. Wat Trapang Ngoen is on an island and is a lotus bud chedi. It is serence, calm and you can relax here especially because it is surrounded by water.
