Songkhla is famous for its strategic role in Thailand’s economy and is a major port situated 950km from Bangkok. Spread over an area of 7,393 sq. km, it shares it borders on the eastern side with the Malaysian Peninsula, and on the south with Kedah and Perlis.
Songkhla also shares its borders with Phatthalung and Nakhon Si Thammarat Provinces in the north, and Pattani and Yala Provinces in the south.
A town that has a strong rooted historical and cultural past, the Songkhla landscape is dotted with ancient ruins. It is considered to be the melting pot of different cultures like the Chinese, Thai, and Malay. As a result, it can hold anyone with its charm by offering some really unique traditions and entertainment, which has been passed down from one generation to another. One of the major attractions is the Songkhla National Museum on the Chana road that highlights the Thai-Chinese architectural style. The Wat Matchimawat monastery is a must see as it is almost 400 years old and displays several artifacts belonging to the glorious Thai past.
The Laem Sai cave located 3km from the town is popular among tourists for the statue of the Mermaid and for the pristine and white sand beaches and pine trees. Another place of interest is the Khao Tangkuan, which is a pagoda at an altitude of 2000 ft above sea level. Hat Yai is the provincial capital and is also a hub of communication, transportation and trading. It is the gateway to Singapore and Malaysia.
