The city of Petchaburi is spread out in an area of 6225 square kilometers about 130 kilometers from Bangkok in the south, 30 kilometer from Cha Am in the north, and about 50 kilometers from Hua Hin in the north.
The landscape of Petchaburi is characterized by thick and heavily wooded jungles, an 80 kilometer long serpentine coastline along the Gulf of Thailand, and mountain ranges that make a natural border between Thailand and Burma. All these natural attractions make Petchaburi a good place to visit. Besides this the busy town offers visitors a chance to know the ancient Thai culture and history.
The short name for Petchaburi is Muangphetch, and is an ancient city with a very long and ancient history. An important city during the Ayutthaya and Sukothai Periods, the remnants of these historical periods can still be found in the ruins and antiques scattered in the town. Also dubbed as the "Living Ayutthaya" because of the similarities it shares with the ancient Ayutthaya City that was destroyed some 200 years ago, Petchaburi has a rich heritage.
Things to see in Petchaburi include the Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park, temples, and an ancient palace called Khao Wang (Palace Hill) by the locals. The Palace is majestically seated atop a 92 meter high pristine hill in Petchaburi. Built in 1860, it served as the summer place to King Rama IV. The palace comprises of halls, building, and temples in the Thai, and the neoclassical Chinese and Western architectural styles.
