Nan is situated at a distance of 668km from Bangkok. With more than 24.000 inhabitants, it is sub divided into 26 regions or chumchon. The name of the town has come from the River Nan that flows right past the city. Nan is basically a small city that has its own brand of charm, and attracts travelers looking for some adventure or peace and relaxation.
One of the famous landmarks is the Nan National Museum, which is situated at the same place where the original palace of the Feudal Lords of Nan existed at one point of time. The Nan National Museum was constructed by Phra Chao Suriyapnong Phalidet in 1903. It is one of the best Museums in Thailand and has been divided into 6 exhibition rooms that showcases ethnological exhibits mostly dealing with the different ethnic groups that existed or exist in the province. Some of the ethnic groups include Thai Lü, the northern Thais, Htin, Mabri, Khamu, Mien and Hmong. Most of the artifacts on display include textiles, Silverwork, utensils and different and colorful tribal costumes.
Another popular place is the King of Nan’s Teak House, which was built with golden teak in 1866.The house has different exhibits that comprise of historical antiques like ancient weapons, photographs taken by King Rama V and war elephant ivory. The most famous structure in Nan is Wat Phumin, which has an architecturally delightful cruciform bôt and it was built in 1596. Other places of interest includes the Wat Phra That Chae Haeng Bridge over the Nan River, the Wat Phra That Chang Kham temple and the Wat Suan Tan monastery.
