Best known for the ancient religious structure referred to as ‘Phra Pathom Chedi’, this structure is reminiscent and important because it is the first religious landmark signifying the arrival of the Buddhist religion into Thailand. Though this town was left deserted for many hundreds of year, it was during the reign of King Rama IV, that the abandoned town got a fresh new lease of life. The king founded the Chedi, which he regarded to be the largest pagoda in the world then. The king also built a palace called Phuttha Monthon at Tambon Sanam Chan. The ruins are still there, standing in testimony of the glorious days of the past.
More than the history of bygones eras, it is the love and warm of the locals which makes the stay here a pleasure. The society is agrarian, and most locals earn their livelihood from plantations, farming, growing crops, and growing fruits.
