Chumphon means ‘lots of blessings’ and it’s easy to know why, with much of coastal and inland beauty, Chumphon boasts of many national parks, and mountains, an almost unending sea shore of over 222 kilometres sprinkled with some of the most glorious golden beaches, diverse culture and traditions, and an all-year round comfortable, balmy weather only furthers the charm and allure of this once famous city.
The geographical location of Chumphon is another draw as it is surrounded by a wide array striking natural features such as the Prachuap Khiri Khan (famous for its Hua Hin beach) in the north, the Surat Thani (famous of the Samui Island) in the south, and the Myanmar border in the west and the seemingly infinite coastline in the east.
A leading trading centre back in its glory days, the name ‘Chumphon’ is believed to be derived from the world ‘Chumnumphon’ meaning ‘the accumulation of forces’. Others believe that the name could also have been derived from ‘Maduea Chumphon,’ a local plant which is found in abundance here.
