The Ko Phi Phi Islands are part of Krabi Province, which is the southern most province in Thailand, and is located in the Phang Nga Bay, a part of the Andaman Sea of the Eastern Indian Ocean. The island is just 42 kilometres from Phuket.
Phi Phi Don is the main island and the bigger of the two Phi Phi Islands. Phi Phi Leh is the smaller island and is primarily a mainland. Ko Phi Phi Don is also the only island that boasts of permanent inhabitants. Nevertheless, the beaches of Phi Phi Leh are also popular amongst tourists, but tourists will have to stay at the Ko Phi Phi Don Island since Phi Phi Leh doesn’t have any accommodation facilities. Other islands, part of the island group, include Bida Nok, Bida Noi, and Bamboo Island, which primarily consist of large limestone rocks rising from the turquoise waters.
Ko Phi Phi Leh, the second largest island in the group, was the location for Leonardo Dicaprio’s 2000 movie, ‘The Beach’. After the release of this movie, Ko Phi Phi Island witnessed a dramatic increase in the tourist population.
